Gary Plauché became widely known after he shot and killed Jeff Doucet, the man who had kidnapped and sexually abused his 11-year-old son, Jody Plauché. On March 16, 1984, as Doucet was being escorted through the Baton Rouge airport by police after being captured, Plauché, who was waiting by a payphone, took matters into his own hands. In a moment captured on live television, Plauché drew a handgun and shot Doucet in the head, killing him instantly. Despite the public nature of the killing, Plauché received a suspended sentence and probation, as many saw his actions as a father's justifiable response to Doucet's despicable crime.
